It feels more like a mix-tape showcase than a full-length Dr. Instead of those impeccably-delivered Dre verses that were fun to rap along with, I got too many guest appearances from today’s rappers that just don’t do it for me. I expected those heavy, melodic, bangin’ beats of old, but what I got was a much more new-age hip hop sound. Finally.īut when I listened to it, it fell flat. As kind of a supplement to the movie Straight Outta Compton (see it), this album would be called Compton, and it (actually!) came out in August 2015. So you can imagine my excitement when, out of the blue, I heard there was another Dre album coming. But eventually I accepted the fact that Detox was never coming. One was decent, although a total cheese-fest, and the other was a certified banger. However, despite the constant teasing, only a couple songs ever trickled out. ![]() (That’s an objective fact, btw).Īnd then every two years or so, we’d hear rumors of his next release, Detox, and it was going to be awesome. Then in 1999, he dropped 2001, one of the best albums (Kanye voice:) OF ALL TIME. Then a bunch of stuff happened for 7 years, none of which resulted in a new Dre album. Shout out to you, Marty.įor you non-history buffs: In 1992, he came out with The Chronic, a consensus classic. Back in college, my friend Marty once said “he’s not the best, but he is my favorite.” And even though he’s never been quite my favorite, I can relate to that. Because if there’s one thing a dating blog written by a middle-class white guy needs, it’s more Dr. To support such an out-of-the-box theory, let’s talk about Dr.
